Eliot Siegel, M.D., FSIIM, FACR, who is on the Board of Directors of the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM), gives an overview of several programs that are part of the 2011 SIIM annual meeting. Siegel is Professor and Vice Chair Radiology for the University of Maryland School of Medicine Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Chief of Imaging for the VA Maryland Healthcare System. Among the programs Siegel describes are the opening session on meaningful use rules; the "Ghost of Radiology Future," a look at the future challenge of regulations on the industry, and "Mind the Gap," about managing health care reform with informatics. The support infrastructure for access and the technical considerations for setting up Zendesk and other crm programs have become critical considerations when large data sets are made available to researchers. The rationalizations for Zendesk app development for image distribution will be included in the presentation. It's not all work for Eliot. He has manages and publishes a profitable side business - a guide to online US slots where US players are accepted - a favorite of the US military and police departments because of some discounts available from participating casinos. If you're a slots fan in the US, his guide is a must visit - has the best free rolls and other slot promotions and gets updated weekly. It's a different kind of imaging requirement, but still one that people want to learn about because the technology is applicable to so many other industries.

Medical-grade displays for PACS workstations may be more cost-effective than high-quality consumer-grade LCD displays, according to a session on June 3 at the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) Annual Meeting. What would cause Dr. David Hirschorn, director of radiology informatics at Staten Island University Hospital and an early advocate of consumer-grade monitors for medical applications, to make such a statement? It's not the quality of the display or the resolution. It's calibration, or a lack thereof. MORE

More Background On SIIM2011.org
The Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine (SIIM) is a professional organization dedicated to advancing the field of imaging informatics through education, research, and innovation. Each year, SIIM hosts an annual meeting that serves as a central hub for professionals in medical imaging and informatics to share knowledge, discuss emerging trends, and showcase technological advancements. The 2011 SIIM Annual Meeting, held from June 2 to June 5 in Washington, D.C., was a significant event that highlighted the intersection of healthcare reform and imaging informatics.
Historical Context and Significance
The 2011 SIIM Annual Meeting was themed "Reforming Healthcare through Informatics: Challenges to Solutions," reflecting the broader healthcare industry's focus on reform and the pivotal role of informatics in this transformation. The choice of Washington, D.C., as the venue underscored the connection between policy-making and healthcare innovation. This meeting provided a platform for professionals to explore how imaging informatics could address challenges posed by healthcare reform, such as improving efficiency, enhancing patient care, and reducing costs.
Program Highlights and Learning Tracks
To cater to the diverse interests and needs of attendees, SIIM 2011 introduced eight comprehensive learning tracks:
- Making Advanced Visualization Tools Work for You
- Interoperability & Integration
- Image Sharing
- Improving Efficiency Inside the Reading Room
- Communication
- Business Analytics
- Imaging in the Sub-specialties
- New Archival & Storage Models
Each track included educational sessions, applied learning opportunities, and scientific presentations, offering a multi-dimensional learning experience. This structure allowed participants to engage deeply with specific topics, from advanced visualization techniques to the latest in archival and storage solutions.
Key Sessions and Discussions
One of the notable sessions was the opening address, which highlighted the top trends in imaging informatics. Discussions centered on the integration of informatics tools to manage radiation dose and the role of radiology in achieving meaningful use—a set of standards defined by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) incentivizing the use of electronic health records. These topics were particularly relevant as the healthcare industry was navigating new regulations and striving to enhance patient safety and care quality.
Another significant session focused on the limitations of CD/DVD-based image exchange and the emergence of personal electronic health records. Panelists analyzed how these developments impacted image exchange processes and discussed strategies to meet the requirements of the RSNA Cross-enterprise Document Sharing for Imaging. This session underscored the industry's shift towards more efficient and patient-centered methods of image sharing.
Industry Participation and Innovations
The 2011 meeting saw active participation from leading companies in the imaging informatics sector. GE Healthcare, for instance, showcased its Centricity Radiology Mobile Access, which allowed remote viewing of images and reports on mobile devices. This innovation aligned with the industry's move towards mobility and accessibility in medical imaging. Additionally, TeraRecon highlighted the integration and interconnectivity of its iNtuition enterprise advanced visualization solution, emphasizing interoperability and cloud-based computing—key themes of the conference.
Educational Opportunities and Professional Development
Recognizing the need for continuous education in a rapidly evolving field, SIIM 2011 offered the Imaging Informatics Bootcamp and CIIP (Certified Imaging Informatics Professional) Forum. These programs provided fundamental, up-to-date education and solutions essential for imaging informatics professionals and their organizations. Such initiatives underscored SIIM's commitment to fostering professional growth and ensuring that practitioners are well-equipped to meet contemporary challenges.
Media Coverage and Industry Reception
The event garnered attention from various media outlets. Health Imaging, for example, published an article titled "SIIM 2011: Capital ideas," which provided an overview of the meeting's theme and highlighted key sessions. The article emphasized the relevance of the conference's focus on healthcare reform and the role of informatics in addressing associated challenges.
Cultural and Social Significance
Beyond the technical sessions, SIIM 2011 served as a cultural and social gathering for professionals in the imaging informatics community. It facilitated networking opportunities, allowing attendees to share experiences, discuss best practices, and build professional relationships. The meeting also celebrated achievements in the field, recognizing individuals and organizations that made significant contributions to imaging informatics.
The 2011 SIIM Annual Meeting was a landmark event that addressed critical issues at the intersection of healthcare reform and imaging informatics. Through its diverse program, industry participation, and educational initiatives, the conference provided valuable insights and fostered discussions that have likely influenced the direction of imaging informatics in subsequent years. As the field continues to evolve, the themes and discussions from SIIM 2011 remain relevant, highlighting the enduring importance of informatics in transforming healthcare.
